Claim this offerSelf Assessment tax returns can seem confusing for small and medium-sized business owners and sole traders. Accountivate is here to make it easy — we ensure your return is submitted correctly and on time, helping you stay compliant with HMRC and maximise any tax savings you are entitled to.
What is Self Assessment?
Self Assessment is used to collect income tax. While tax is typically deducted automatically from wages, pensions and some savings, businesses and individuals with other income must report this in a Self Assessment tax return. The amount of tax you owe depends on your income tax band — HMRC calculates what you owe based on what is reported in your return.
Who needs to register?
There are a number of reasons why you may have to register and complete a Self Assessment return, including:
- Sole traders or self-employed people
- CIS contractors or subcontractors
- Landlords earning rental income
- Partners in a business partnership
- Those declaring dividends, investments or foreign income
- Those receiving tips, commission or other untaxed income
- Anyone who worked from home and needs to claim reliefs
- Those eligible for income tax reliefs not applied automatically
What we do for you
- Review your income, expenses and allowable deductions
- Complete and submit your Self Assessment tax return to HMRC
- Calculate your tax liability and advise on payment deadlines
- Help you register for Self Assessment if you have not filed before
- Ensure you claim all reliefs and allowances you are entitled to
At Accountivate, we have a team of experienced tax and accounting experts who handle Self Assessment returns for sole traders, landlords, CIS contractors, company directors and more. You will need to keep accurate and complete records — we take care of the rest.
Tax returns and payments
Tax returns can be filed online or by post. If you did not complete a Self Assessment tax return online last year, you need to register first, which takes additional time — so do not leave it until the last minute. Online Self Assessment tax returns and payments are due on 31 January after the end of the associated tax year.
Important HMRC deadline
In the UK, tax years run from 6 April to 5 April the following year. Online Self Assessment tax returns and payments are due on 31 January after the end of the tax year. Missing this deadline can result in automatic penalties from HMRC — starting at £100 for returns up to three months late, with further charges for continued delay.
Self Assessment is also included in our sole trader Starter package from £8.25/mo and our Basic accountancy package for company directors. For a one-off return, take advantage of our £99 limited offer today.
